What It Means To Be Religious — Part II

A continuation of my last sermon’s theme, except this time I will focus more on defining what we mean by “liberal religion,” the kind of religion Unitarian Universalists claim to be, which is quite different, of course, from the “literalist” religions we hear so much about these days and don’t ever care to be associated with. What does it mean to be a religious liberal? The comments I often hear from people are “I’m spiritual but not religious.” “I’m not a joiner, you know.” This is a good sermon for people who are thinking about joining the Fellowship or identifying themselves as a UU and for those on the fence, who like to come to the services, but don’t care to join. It’s also a good day to bring a friend who has expressed interest in learning more about UU.

Why bother with organized religion in the first place? Why trade in your Sunday morning New York Times, cozy chair and Bloody Mary for an hour to sit on some relatively hard pews? I will try to answer those questions on Sunday.
