President’s Summer Letter

Dear Members and Friends,

How was your garden this year? (No need to water!). Did you attend a summer service? Did you travel? Did you finish your _______[fill in the blank]? Oh, how time flies! And very soon we’ll all be together again and have the opportunity to catch up. The brief lull in the cycle-of-life referred to as Summer is almost over!

And so, did you attend a Summer service? I had a wonderful time listening to Marge recount her experiences at the U.U. General Assembly. Marge is the veteran of many “GA’s” and her enthusiasm is infectious. Marge recounted her experiences meeting UUs from all over as well as the business of the GA. And, although our preferred candidate (Laurel Hollman) did not win election as UU President, it will be exciting to watch our new President, Peter Morales, work on his goal of building the UU faith. In fact, you may recall that both candidates emphasized the need to grow our numbers as we move into the future; the stakes seem so high and the issues so urgent. And, the good news is: we are growing!  Our membership at UUFBCO is increasing; visitors are increasing and the building seems to be in use more often than ever! (remember to check the calendar on our web site to see what is going on).

The Summer has, however, not been a complete holiday. The Board and various committees meet over the Summer to ensure that the good work of our Fellowship continues.  For example, an ad hoc committee on long range planning convened at the end of June to follow up on the “A3″ produced by the “What’s Next” committee; Nenette Kress and I will be working on the issues identified in the A3 this coming year. You can hear Patrick Varekamp talk about the A3 on Sunday, August 16. Anne Sumers hosted a terrific meeting of the Leadership Council in July-although the meeting was scheduled for 2 hours, we carried on for close to 4! Our new Director of RE, Peggy Clarke, has been busy meeting with folks and preparing for the coming Fellowship Year-please take a minute to introduce yourself to Peggy when you can.

So, when the school bell rings and the Fall cycle begins, we’ll be back together! And, you may notice some changes around the place. The Building and Grounds Committee has been hard at work: maintaining, improving, creating; their many contributions are greatly appreciated by all. See you soon.
