RE Junior & Senior Youth Groups

Junior Youth Group

Our Junior Youth (Grades 6-8) attend a curriculum-based Sunday morning program, and can also take part in “Coming of Age.” This is an elective program for 12-14 year olds who are interested in UU-ism, in exploring their own religious identity and in “Coming of Age,” or becoming members in our Fellowship. The year culminates in a ceremony and reception for youth who have completed the journey.

We are fortunate to have facilitators trained in 7th to 9th grade OWL (Our Whole Lives), an honest and age-appropriate sexual education program which helps participants make informed, responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior.

Senior Youth Group – YRUU (Young Religious Unitarian Universalists)

Youth 14-20 years of age meet with each other and with trained Youth Advisors for community service and social justice activities, worship and the free and open exchange of ideas. The gatherings allow the youth to gain leadership skills, “check in” with one another and share thoughts and feelings in a safe, non-judgmental environment. The group determines the focus and direction they will take, and meets at a mutually agreed-upon time. Historically, this group has met Sunday evenings.

Peace and Social Justice Initiatives: Junior and Senior Youth

Our Junior and Senior Youth Groups are also involved in regular social action. In addition to regular curriculum, these groups participate in Fellowship projects and go on field trips to work with outside organizations. Some examples of social action projects include:

  • Serving meals to approximately 60 people in Peekskill Salvation Army Soup Kitchen each month
  • Participating in craft projects with local nursing home residents
  • Helping local farms care for rescued animals
  • Cleaning up local waterfronts
  • Cleaning up the roadside in front of the Fellowship
  • Cooking meals for participants in local lunchtime meals programs
