To provide ongoing, structured opportunities to develop a religious identity
that is personally meaningful, deeply felt, and based on UU principles,
in an environment that is safe, nurturing, and loving.
Our approach to Religious Education (RE) is guided by our belief in a free and responsible search for truth and meaning. Our program reflects our commitment to basic UU principles: it encourages compassion, self-esteem, tolerance and respect for the interdependent web of life. Children explore the thoughts and beliefs of many religions. We believe in keeping an open mind and looking for truth and inspiration from many sources. Children will become acquainted with UU’s Judeo-Christian heritage, but also with the scriptures, deities, holy days and customs of a variety of world religions, including Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Taoism and Native American religions. We endeavor to show our children that there are many spiritual paths people take to find meaning, and that there is no one path that works for everyone.
Our teachings include moral and ethical principles common in all religions, emphasizing responsibility to others and to our environment. We teach conflict resolution and emphasize the unity of humanity. We encourage curiosity, creativity, a sense of wonder and respect for life’s mysteries. We urge children to ask questions, share doubts and seek answers that are personally satisfying. In this way – and in a safe and loving environment – we hope to give children a profound appreciation of their own wonderings and their own developing religious identities.
Our RE program is free, and is taught by volunteers from our congregation. We encourage parents and all members of our congregation to share their time and talents with our children.
